LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- A heart condition that likely was undiagnosed killed the University of Arkansas football player who was found unconscious in his dorm room over the weekend, a coroner said Tuesday.

Washington County coroner Roger Morris said that to the best of his knowledge, Garrett Uekman's condition, called cardiomyopathy, was not previously detected. In the condition, the heart becomes enlarged.

Uekman, a 19-year-old redshirt freshman tight end, was last seen by his roommate playing video games Sunday morning. He was found unresponsive in his dorm room an hour later and was in cardiac arrest by the time emergency services personnel arrived. He was pronounced dead shortly after noon.

Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long has said the university wasn't aware of any pre-existing medical condition for Uekman. A university spokesman declined comment because school officials hadn't yet seen the written report.

Uekman's toxicology report came back with no indications of improper drug use, Morris said. He said the manner of death was natural. University police have said there were no suspicious circumstances about Uekman's death.

Weekend funeral services will be held in Little Rock.

There are several types of cardiomyopathy, though it wasn't clear which type Uekman suffered from, Morris said. One kind, called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, thickens the heart and makes it harder to pump blood, and is often the culprit when young athletes suddenly collapse and die. Symptoms can include an irregular heartbeat and shortness of breath. In many cases, it goes undetected.

"This young man may have not shown any signs (being) in that great of physical shape," Morris said.

Several thousand mourners gathered in Fayetteville on Monday for a candlelight vigil to remember Uekman. His picture remained on the videoboard at the Bud Walton Arena throughout the ceremony, and those in attendance wore stickers that had black ribbons wrapped in red with a white "88" on them, in honor of Uekman's number.

Ndamukong Suh Stomp: NFL Won't Review Ejection Of Lions Player Before Next Week

DETROIT — For the first season-and-a-half of his young career, Ndamukong Suh could almost brush off talk about his penalties and fines, saying he would keep doing what was needed to help his Detroit Lions.
On Friday, Suh's team publically chastised the star defensive tackle after he was ejected during a Thanksgiving loss to Green Bay for stomping at an opposing player.
"The on-field conduct exhibited by Ndamukong Suh that led to his ejection from yesterday's game was unacceptable and failed to meet the high level of sportsmanship we expect from our players," the team said in a statement Friday night. "Ndamukong has made many positive contributions to the Lions on and off the field. We expect his behavior going forward to consistently reflect that high standard of professionalism."
It could be several days before Suh finds out the true cost of his third-quarter stomp in Detroit's 27-15 loss to the Packers on Thursday. An NFL spokesman said Friday that plays from Week 12 looked at for potential discipline won't be reviewed until all games are completed.
Detroit coach Jim Schwartz was curt after Thursday's defeat when asked if he was worried about a possible suspension.
"I'm worried about losing this game," Schwartz said.
Suh was dismissed after tangling with Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith. After being pushed off Dietrich-Smith, Suh stepped down hard with his right foot, appearing to make contact with Dietrich-Smith's right arm.
Suh said he was trying to keep his balance while freeing himself from the brief scuffle. He publically apologized to teammates, coaches and fans for "allowing the refs to have an opportunity to take me out of this game," but he insisted he didn't intentionally step on anyone.
"People are going to have their own opinions – that's fine," he said. "The only (people) that I really care about are my teammates, my true fans and my coaches and their opinions, and that's where it lies. And honestly, the most important person in this whole thing that I have to deal with is the man upstairs."

In less than two seasons as a pro, Suh has established himself as one of the game's strongest and most athletic defensive linemen, but he's also received his share of fines.
Suh requested and received a meeting earlier this month with Commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss his play. He said that dialogue was helpful, but now the league will have to decide whether more discipline is merited after he was ejected on national television.
New York Jets coach Rex Ryan came up with one tongue-in-cheek solution Friday.
"I'll be honest with you, I think the young man, he should be released ... and come to the Jets," Ryan joked. "I'm just throwing that out there. I don't think he's that good of a player. I don't know about the incident and all that jazz, but we'll take him. We'll sacrifice that way."
Ryan then turned a little more serious.
"I don't even know what to say on it," Ryan said. "You've seen things like that happen on the field before. It's an emotional game."
Jets offensive lineman Matt Slauson, who played with Suh at Nebraska, sounded off on the topic Friday.
"Somebody needs to get him under control, because he's trying to hurt people," Slauson told the New York Post. "It's one thing to be an incredibly physical player and a tenacious player, but it's another thing to set out to end that guy's career."
Slauson said last year that he and Suh used to mix it up in practice while in college.
"There were times we got into fights, during spring ball, during camp, but I kind of fought everyone," Slauson said then.
In 2006, Albert Haynesworth, then with the Tennessee Titans, was suspended five games after swiping his cleats across the head of helmetless Dallas center Andre Gurode. Suh's stomp wasn't toward Dietrich-Smith's head, and the Green Bay player didn't seem too much worse for wear.
When asked afterward where Suh stepped on him, Dietrich-Smith sounded like he didn't want to stir the pot.
"I have no idea," he said. "I have to watch the tape."
If Suh is suspended early next week, he would have a chance to keep playing pending any appeal – but that appeals process can be expedited. Detroit plays at New Orleans on Dec. 4.
The NFL moved that game to prime time, a reflection of the buzz surrounding the improved Lions this season. Led by young stars Suh, Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson, Detroit won its first five games, but the Lions have since lost four of six.
Defensive backs Louis Delmas, Chris Houston and Brandon McDonald went down with injuries against the Packers, and so did running back Kevin Smith. If the Lions are without Suh for an extended period, it could hurt them in the playoff race.
"He plays aggressive. All of us, sometimes, might overreact in certain situations," Detroit defensive lineman Cliff Avril said. "We've got to play real smart."

I think the best story I ever wrote was 'The Ship Who Sang'. It still causes people to cry, including me. When Todd and I were reading it at Brighton, they had a BBC crew filming it. So there were these BBC cameramen hunkered down filming us, and comes the end of the story (which Todd always reads, because I can't go through it without weeping), I saw that these cameramen had tears rolling down their faces. That's such a thrill — a story I wrote at the beginning of my career, and it's still packin' the house. I wrote that story because I couldn't tell my father, he died in 1953. I remember reading a story — I can't remember the name or that of the author — about a woman searching for her son's brain, it had been used for an autopilot on an ore ship and she wanted to find it and give it surcease. And I thought what if severely disabled people were given a chance to become starships? What if they wanted to do that? I thought, 'Hey, that would be a gorgeous idea.' So that's how 'The Ship Who Sang' was born.

McCaffrey's first novel, Restoree, was written in response to the unrealistic depiction of women in science fiction and fantasy.

But it was the many Pern novels that sealed her renown. One of my fondest convention memories is of going to Dragon*Con one year and attending a panel about "Emergency Medicine on Pern." There, a group of extremely earnest — but good-humored — people were hashing out exactly what you would do if someone happened to be on Pern and fell of his/her dragon. How would you make a stretcher out of items that were readily available on Pern? How would you keep the fallen rider's dragon from freaking out? And so on. The world of Pern was as real to these people as Atlanta — maybe more so.

that he needs to be holding the clipboard and going over reads and scenarios with the starting QB and the coaches. That’s how he’ll get on-the-job training. But, in terms of him getting reps to see how he does, I don’t think that has any effect on whether we should draft a QB high or not. Hear me out. In a blowout game, they’re going to be playing zone and he’ll probably get a lot of yards. It will be an inaccurate assessment of his abilities. If his play is mediocre or bad, we can chalk it up to inexperience. In either scenario, we should still draft a QB high…why wouldn’t we? Now, if he starts a game against a tough opponent and dominates, our draft strategy could be affected. But, we’re not going to start him unless Palko and Orton both get hurt. Besides, the chances that he could or would do that are minimal. As soon as we drafted Orton, I knew it was the end of Stanzi’s bid to make a start this year. And, it’s not a terrible thing for him. He’ll have an entire offseason to get ready to compete in next year’s training camp. We will still see what he can do. The main point I’m trying to make, though, is that our draft strategy for 2012 should not be affected.

Martinez had every excuse to shy away from the spotlight and just give up hope.

When Martinez's Humvee truck ran over a landmine in Iraq when he was 19, he suffered a coma and intense burns on more than 40 percent of his body. He spent more than two years in the hospital and underwent 33 surgeries, which included painful skin grafts and tissue expansions.

The veteran told the Houston Chronicle that he would cry and yell, "Why are you doing this to me? I don’t even know you!" when the hospital staff scrubbed dead skin off his body.

Despite the agony and his disfigurement, Martinez decided to show burn victims that they can proudly bear their scars.

"He would visit other soldiers, other patients. He wasn't afraid to talk about what happened," Maj. David Admire, an occupational therapist at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital told the Leaf Chronicle. "He wasn’t afraid to show his face, which was huge."

The flamboyant founder of Penthouse magazine, who once ranked among the richest men in America before a string of bad investments and something called Internet porn decimated his fortune, died Wednesday at a hospital in Plano, Texas. He was 79 and had been battling lung cancer.

Guccione created Penthouse in 1965, in part to finance his own art career and also as an in-your-face answer to the glossier Playboy.

"We were the first to show full-frontal nudity," he told New York magazine in 2004.

And the rest could just be "Dear Penthouse" history, if not for Guccione's outsize personality.

Though he lost a lot more money doing other things, his most artistic belly flop was the notoriously bad 1979 film Caligula.

Starring John Gielgud, Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole and a lovely young Helen Mirren and written by Gore Vidal, the film about the life of the Roman emperor Caligula had the makings of a winner.

But somewhere between the early production problems that ran up the cost of the film and the extra sex and graphic nudity that Guccione wanted added in postproduction, all went horribly wrong.

Over the years, Guccione amassed an art collection that included works by Picasso and Matisse and was valued at $59 million, but he was forced to sell as his money troubles (tax issues, lost revenue due to Internet porn, etc.) piled up in the 1990s.

And though he lost control of Penthouse in a 2004 bankruptcy sale, he remained proud of what Penthouse—which, he estimated, made $4 billion while he reigned as published—had brought to the table (besides full-frontal nudity).

"We followed the philosophy of voyeurism," he told London's Independent newspaper in 2004. "To see her as if she doesn't know she's being seen. That was the sexy part. That was the part that none of our competition understood."

His business colleague and first wife, Kathy Keeton, died in 1997 but was listed on the magazine's masthead as President until it changed hands.

Guccione is survived by his fourth wife, April, as well as a daughter from his first marriage and a daughter and three sons with his second wife, Nina. Bob Guccione Jr. is the founder of Spin magazine.

It was Roy Halladay's first postseason appearance, and it was an absolute masterpiece.

Halladay's stuff was as good as it's ever been. The fastball darted in and out. His command was impeccable. He only needed 104 pitches. I'm just floored right now. He has a Perfect Game and a postseason no-hitter under his belt. We are lucky fans!

You could be arrested for a crime you didnt commit if an Identity Thief, while posing as you, commits a crime. You could be denied a place to live if an Identity Thief ruined your credit. Your wages could be garnished for debts that arent yours if an Identity Thief, while posing as you, ran up large bills and didnt pay those bills. Identity Thieves can also get personal information about you by dumpster diving. Dumpster diving is when Identity Thieves go through your trash and look for anything containing personal information that youve thrown away. Theyll look for bank statements, credit card statements, medical bills, insurance records, and theyll be looking for pre-approved credit applications. Thats because all a Identity Thief needs to do with a pre-approved credit application is to forge your signature and change the mailing address for delivery of the credit card and monthly statements, and the Identity Thief will get credit issued in your name.

Identity Thieves can also get personal information about you by stealing your mail. This is one of the most common ways that Identity Thieves get information about their victims. Frequently, after Identity Thieves steal your mail, theyll contact your bank and credit card companies, and while posing as you, change the mailing addresses on your accounts. So you might not discover for weeks or even months that your identity has been stolen. Identity Thieves can also get personal information by fraudulently obtaining your credit report. The Identity Thief may pose as someone who has a legitimate need for that report, such as a landlord or an employer, and then the Identity Thief will have all of your credit information. Identity Ts can also get your personal information by calling or sending mail or e-mail with bogus promises or prizes. The Identity Thief may say Congratulations., Mrs. Jones, youve won a trip around the world. But before we can send your prize, we need to confirm that youre really the Mrs. Jones whos the winner. So if youll just give us your full name, your date of birth and your social security number, well get your prize right out to you. Of course, what happens is, after Mrs. Jones provides her personal information, she never receives any prize in the mail. Instead, what happens is Mrs. Jones becomes another Identity Theft victim.

THIRD QUESTION

Now Id like to shift the focus to how does an Identity Thief use your personal information. An Identity Thief can use your personal information in many different ways. An Identity Thief can use your personal information to obtain credit cards in your name. Thats what a man in Florida did. He got personal information about more than 100 children who were patients at a hospital where he worked. The thief then got dozens of credit cards as well as fraudulent identification cards in the names of those children. Identity Thieves can also access your existing bank and credit card accounts, forge checks or debit cards, and then drain your accounts.

Identity Thieves might open new bank accts in your name. Theyll frequently deposit a small amount of money, and then write bad checks on the accts. Identity Thieves may also obtain loans or mortgages in your name, or they might receive utilities or other services in your name.

Identity Thieves might also file a bankruptcy case in your name, which will negatively impact your credit. For those of you not familiar with the bankruptcy process, when a bankruptcy case is filed, an automatic stay goes into effect that immediately stops all debt collection proceedings against the debtor, thats the person filing the bankruptcy, or any property of the debtor. So, if an Identity Thief has gotten credit cards or a loan or mortgage in your name, the Identity Thief might file a bankruptcy case in your name, to avoid paying the debts, to avoid eviction, or to avoid foreclosure on a property that was bought in your name. Identity Thieves might also commit crimes in your name. This is one of the most horrendous types of Identity Theft, because not only could your reputation be ruined, but you could be possibly arrested and even placed in jail for a crime you didnt commit. Thats exactly what happened to a man in California. He was arrested and placed in jail on five separate occasions, for a robbery and a murder he had nothing to do with. Those crimes were committed by a previously convicted felon, who assumed the victims identity before committing those crimes.

You may be asking yourself: How could this be happening to you? You may have absolutely no idea. In fact, you may not discover the fraud for several years. On the average, it normally takes more than a year between the time your identity is stolen and the time you discover youre an Identity Theft victim. You also may have to spend years trying to repair your credit and trying to restore your good name.

FOURTH QUESTION

Now, Ive discussed how an Identity Thief gets your personal information, and how an Identity Thief uses your personal information. Id now like to shift the focus to how can you protect yourself from Identity Theft. Do not provide personal information over the phone, through the mail, or over the Internet unless you place the call or sent the letter or e-mail, and you know youre dealing with a reputable company. Although there are exceptions, generally companies that you do business with do not have to ask for your personal information, because they should already have all the information they need about you in your files.

If you get a call saying, Congratulations, youve won a prize. Do not provide or confirm any information. As part of these scams, the Identity Thieves will frequently claim that you need to pay a processing fee or a down payment fee, or theyll make up some other excuse why you need to send money. But if you really won a prize, theres no reason why you should be paying for that prize. Do not send any money, and do not give out any credit card information.

Also, do not post personal information on the internet. You have no control over who might access that information or how your personal information might be used. Web sites where you might be tempted to post personal information and might not be thinking about becoming an Identity Theft victim are family tree sites and class reunion sites, just to name two.

Also, do not carry your social security card unless its absolutely necessary. Your social security number is used in so many different situations to identify you, that once an Identity Thief has your social security number, it becomes much easier to impersonate you. If you live in a state where your social security number is your drivers license number, contact your Department of Motor Vehicles and request that they issue you a new randomly generated drivers license number. Also, make sure to guard your wallet or your purse. Do not leave your purse hanging over the back of your chair, unattended. Do not carry more credit cards than you need. And unless youre going on a trip, do not carry your passport or your visa around with you. Also, do not carry your Personal Identification Number or your password in your wallet in your purse, because if your wallet or your purse is stolen, the thief will have your bank and credit card information, as well as all the information necessary to access your accounts.

Make sure to keep your mail private. Get a locking mailbox or a post office box for delivery of incoming mail. Do not leave mail lying around your home, especially if you have roommates or people who come into your home on a regular basis. Do not allow mail to pile up if youre going to be away. Have a neighbor or friend pick it up for you, or have it held at the post office until you return. Use a U.S. mail box or the post office for outgoing mail. Do not leave outgoing mail in your home mailbox where it can easily be stolen. And unless you have a locking mailbox, have new checks delivered to your bank or to your post office box, and not to your home.

Make sure to also be careful with personal information both at home and when youre traveling. Use a telephone where you cannot be overheard, if you need to give out personal information. Make sure no one is looking over your shoulder when youre at an ATM machine or at a pay phone. And be aware that cell phone conversations can sometimes be intercepted and overheard, so do not use a cell phone to provide personal information.

Make sure to review your credit card and bank statements each and every month, and report any fraudulent activity immediately. Be aware of when you typically get your statements each month. And if you dont receive them within a few days, call your bank and your credit card companies to make sure that no one has recently changed the mailing address on your accounts.

In terms of your credit cards, make sure to shield your credit cards from view. When youre buying something, dont leave your credit card lying on the counter, where someone whos nearby can see your credit card number as well as your name, and either memorize it or jot it down. Total your receipts before signing. Do not leave empty spaces on your receipts where additional amounts can be added. Never sign blank receipts, and keep copies of all of your receipts and compare them with your monthly bills.

Regarding your bank accounts, never sign blank checks. Do not leave empty spaces on your checks where additional amounts can be added. And make sure to balance your checkbook every month.

Also, check your credit reports every year. The three credit reporting agencies are Equifax, Experion and TransUnion, and you need to request a copy of your credit report from each of these agencies, because they get their information from different sources. Once you get your credit reports, review them very, very carefully. If there are any accounts that you did not open, or any other information that you believe is inaccurate, contact the credit reporting agency immediately. Make sure that you call and send a follow-up letter to the credit reporting agency outlining exactly what you believe is wrong. The credit reporting agencies must investigate your claim, unless they believe its frivolous.

Make sure to also put passwords on all of your bank and your credit card accounts. Do not choose passwords that are easy to guess, such as your mothers maiden name, your social security number, or your date of birth. And make sure to shred or tear up documents with any personal information. Also, make a list of all of your credit cards and bank accounts, and keep that list in a safe place. Make sure to also keep copies of your credit card statements, bank statements, and checks, at least for a few years.

FIFTH QUESTION

Now, even if you take all of the precautions that Ive discussed, it is possible that your identity could still be stolen. So now Id like to talk about the final topic in this presentation, which is what should you do if you are a victim of Identity Theft. You need to take action immediately. And the first thing that you need to do is to file a police report. It is very important to file a police report, because youll need that report to dispute any fraudulent charges on your existing accounts, and to dispute any fraudulent new accounts that were opened in your name. Also, if you send a copy of the police report to the credit reporting agencies, they will block any information on your credit report thats a result of the Identity Theft.

Youll also need to contact your creditors, make sure to close all affected accounts, and request that your accounts indicate that they were closed at the consumers request, rather than the account was closed because the credit card or checkbook was lost or stolen. [] Ask creditors to contact you before opening new accounts or making any changes to your existing accounts. Depending on the type of Identity Theft thats occurred, you may have to stop payments on checks, request new ATM cards and change your Personal Identification Numbers or your passwords.

Youll also need to contact the 3 credit reporting agencies. Request that they place a fraud alert in your file. Add a victims statement to your file. That statement should include your name, an explanation. of what happened, and a telephone number and address where you can be reached. Request that creditors contact you before opening any new accounts in your name, and request a free copy of your credit report. The credit reporting agencies must provide a free credit report to anyone whos been a victim of fraud. Also contact the Federal Trade Commission at the toll free number listed on the screen. This number is a hotline for Identity Theft victims to file complaints and to get information about repairing their credit.

Make sure to keep detailed records. Keep copies of all letters you write, a summary of all phone calls you make, and receipts for any expenses you incur in trying to clear up your credit. If the identity thief is prosecuted and convicted, he may be ordered to compensate you for those expenses.

Depending upon the type of crime thats occurred, you may also need to contact . . . The Department of Motor Vehicles, the Internal Revenue Service, the Passport Office, the Social Security Administration, the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Secret Service, and the U.S. Trustees Office.

There are a number of federal statutes that can be used to prosecute Identity Thieves. There is an Identity Theft statute that can be used to prosecute someone who uses your personal identifying information to commit a crime. An identity thief could also be prosecuted for bank fraud or bankruptcy fraud if the thief got a loan or mortgage or filed a bankruptcy case in your name. An identity thief could be prosecuted for SS Fraud if the thief fraudulently used your SSN. ID thieves can also be prosecuted for mail or wire fraud if they sent letters or made phone calls as part of an identity theft scheme.

CONCLUSION

You are in the best position to protect yourself from identity theft. By being aware of how easily an identity thief can get your personal information and by keeping your personal information private, you can minimize the likelihood that your identity will be stolen. If it does happen to you, do not despair. By taking the simple steps outlined in this program, you will be able to reduce the time it takes to clear up your credit and to restore your good name.
